The oceans absorb substantial amounts of carbon dioxide. With reference to climate change, the greenhouse gas CO2 is of primary interest in the global carbon cycle. The burning of fossil fuels is a major contributory factor. ​Climate change not only leads to warming of the atmosphere and water, but also to an acidification of the oceans. The mass of plastic debris and other pollutants in the world’s oceans is steadily increasing – often with fatal consequences for many marine mammals.
Science Daily: The first-ever global nitrogen footprint, encompassing 188 countries, has found the United States, China, India and Brazil are responsible for 46 percent of the world's nitrogen emissions.
