The burning of fossil fuels is a major contributory factor. Climate change not only leads to warming of the atmosphere and water, but also to an acidification of the oceans. The mass of plastic debris and other pollutants in the world’s oceans is steadily increasing – often with fatal consequences for many marine mammals.
